Larissa Krainer

Larissa Krainer (* 1967 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian philosopher and communication scientist. She is an associate professor at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt and Chairwoman of the Senate of the University of Klagenfurt.

Life

Krainer studied philosophy and media and communication sciences at the University of Klagenfurt . From 1988 to 1997 she worked as a journalist for various newspapers and magazines (e.g. Kärntner Volkszeitung , Der Standard , ORF-Landesstudio Kärnten, Die Brücke, FORVM ). In 1991 she and her colleagues founded the first bilingual weekly newspaper in Carinthia, TANGO (Dvojezični Tednik na Koroškem), which she directed until 1993.

From 1995 to 1997, Krainer headed the regional office of Amnesty International in Carinthia. She has been a member of the University of Klagenfurt since 1998, where she completed her habilitation in 2001. From 2009 to 2011 she held a contract professorship there and has been chairwoman of the university's Senate since 2016. She was a co-founder of the former "Institute for Intervention Research and Cultural Sustainability".

In 2015, Krainer founded the Interdisciplinary Mediaethics Center (IMEC) together with colleagues, which endeavors to promote an interdisciplinary exchange on topics of media ethics in the context of mediatization through regular conferences and publications . She is also involved with Marlis Prinzing and Mark Eisenegger in a transnational initiative in the DACH region for the establishment of media and communication studies as a public science.

Scientific contribution

Larissa Krainer's publications focus on media and communication studies as well as philosophical work in the field of media ethics and process ethics , publications on the methodical and epistemological foundation of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research (especially intervention research ), work in the field of science and sustainability communication as well as individual contributions on media and specialist history.

In her dissertation, Krainer dealt with Austrian women's magazines and their economic orientation, and in 2015 and 2019, respectively, she presented updated publications. In her habilitation thesis she worked out the numerous areas of tension and contradictions in the field of media ethics. In 2010 she and Peter Heintel presented a basic work on process ethics. In numerous academic articles in anthologies and specialist journals, she deals with the question of which currently dominant cultural patterns promote or hinder sustainable development (research on sustainability communication and cultural sustainability).

Another research focus of Krainer is the topic of science communication . In her media-ethical publications she deals with the journalistic system, which is facing new ethical challenges in the digital age, as well as with the digital everyday communication of young and older people. In numerous workshops, the researcher supports practitioners in dealing with specific ethical questions and, in addition to scientific specialist articles, also regularly publishes in public media in order to transfer knowledge to society.
