Larry McKeon

Larry McKeon (born June 30, 1944 in Nampa , Idaho , † May 13, 2008 in Springfield , Illinois ) was an American politician . He was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives for the Democratic Party . McKeon was the first publicly gay member of the Illinois General Assembly . He was also HIV positive . McKeon died of a stroke at the age of 63 .

biography

He graduated from California State University in Los Angeles with honors.

Before moving to Chicago , he held the rank of lieutenant in the United States Army with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department .

In 1996 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives, the General Assembly, and sworn in the following January.

In July 2006 he announced his resignation in January 2007. His successor was Greg Harris , who was also gay . On May 13, 2008, he died in Springfield ( Illinois ).
