Lawrence James "Larry" Shields (* 13. September 1893 in New Orleans , Louisiana ; † 21st November 1953 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American jazz - clarinetist of the early New Orleans jazz .

He came from a musical family and his three brothers - including Harry Shields - also became professional musicians. He learned the clarinet at the age of 14 and played in the bands of Papa Jack Laine before going to Chicago in the summer of 1915 to join Bert Kelly's band . Shields then played in Tom Brown's band before joining the Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB) in November 1916 (where he replaced Alcide Nunez ). With this band he made the first (nationwide successful) "Jazz" recordings in 1917. In 1921 he left the band and played in New York City a . a. with Paul Whiteman's band before moving to Los Angeles , where he led his own band and also appeared briefly in several Hollywood films. In the 1930s he went back to Chicago to play with the reissued ODJB. Then he played in "Nick's" in New York , again in New Orleans and then moved to California.
