Lars Peter Silas Mathæus "Arĸaluk" Møller (also Lars Peder Sillas Matthæus Møller and in the new spelling Aqqaluk ; born January 9, 1842 in Nuuk ; † January 20, 1926 ibid) was a Greenlandic editor , printer , lithographer , draftsman , translator , interpreter and expedition participants .

Life

Lars Møller was the son of Peter Erik Møller (1816-1897) and his wife Ane Elisabeth Karen Lynge (1817-1905).

He was brought up as a hunter and fisherman at first, but when Inspector Hinrich Johannes Rink opened the printing works in Nuuk in 1857, the only 15-year-old Lars Møller started there as a helper and apprentice. In 1861 he received further training in typography and lithography from Rink for half a year in Denmark and then returned to the print shop, in which from then on the Atuagagdliutit was printed. In 1873/74 he replaced Rasmus Berthelsen as editor of the Atuagagdliutit. He illustrated the stories in the newspaper himself with color printing and his newspaper is seen as a means of awakening the interest of the Greenlanders in reading at the end of the 19th century. He also translated from Danish to fill the Atuagagdliutit with texts. His knowledge of the country and the people and his work had a noticeable effect on the Greenlandic-Danish network, in which he acted as an interpreter for the numerous inspectors during his tenure and as a specialist brought them closer to their inspectorate. He was also an important source of information for the polar explorers traveling in Greenland, for example he accompanied Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld on his expedition in 1883 and made a large number of drawings. In 1922, Lars Møller, now 80 years old, was succeeded by Kristoffer Lynge after 65 years of work .

On February 10, 1867 he married Louise Malene Kristiane Rasmussen (1847–1928), daughter of the hunting guide Peter Rasmussen (1802–1864) and his wife Ane Kathrine Platou (1813–1885), daughter of the inspector Christian Alexander Platou . The following children were born from the marriage:

  • John Peter Christian Møller (born November 19, 1867 in Nuuk; † July 9, 1935 there), printer and photographer
  • Claus Elias Karl Møller (born March 31, 1870 in Nuuk)
  • Sophie Birgitte Jakobine Møller (born June 17, 1872 in Nuuk)
  • Stillborn son (* / † August 3, 1879 in Nuuk)
  • Stephen Pavia Kristian Møller (born September 17, 1882 in Nuuk, † March 11, 1909 ibid), draftsman and painter

From 1892 he was the bearer of the Fortjenstmedaljen in silver and from 1917 Knight of the Dannebrog Order . He died in early 1926 shortly after his 84th birthday.
