Michigan has State Wildlife Management Areas , State Wildlife Areas , State Fish and Wildlife Areas , State Wildlife Research Areas , State Game Areas, and Waterfowl Production Areas . These protected areas are designated and maintained by the states. The areas within the Wildlife Management Areas or similar protected areas belong to the federal states. The protected areas serve to protect wild animals and leisure activities. They also serve as a state hunting and fishing area. Hunters are allowed to hunt here for licenses. They are comparable to a nature park . They differ from the state parks in the USA in their special focus on hunting and fishing.
