Late Blossom Blues (full title: Late Blossom Blues - The Journey of Leo "Bud" Welch ) is an award-winning documentary by the two Austrian filmmakers Wolfgang Pfoser-Almer and Stefan Wolner from 2017. The film is a portrait of the blues and gospel singer Leo "Bud" Welch from Mississippi , USA, who only released his debut album at the age of 82 and then gave countless appearances in Europe and North America.

content

The film shows Leo “Bud” Welch in his daily life in his hometown Bruce, MS and follows him to concerts in Aberdeen, New Orleans, Montgomery and on a tour of Austria to Schlierbach, Weyer and St. Pölten. In addition to Welch and his manager Vencie Varnado, Bruce Watson (label boss of Big Legal Mess Records), Dixie Street (drummer), Roger Stolle (blues expert), Bill Luckett (owner Ground Zero Blues Club) and Welch's family and friends have their say in the film.

production

Wolfgang Pfoser-Almer, artistic director of the Linzfest 2014 , invited Leo “Bud” Welch to play his first concert outside the USA in Linz. After this guest appearance, the decision matured in Pfoser-Almer to make his debut film about Welch. Pfoser-Almer got help from Stefan Wolner , a former student colleague who, as a filmmaker, had the necessary contacts and specialist knowledge. After a successfully completed crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, the film was shot for two weeks in the USA in October 2014 and an additional week in Austria in December 2014, each with the protagonist Welch.

criticism

The film was shown at over 30 film festivals around the world and was very well received by audiences and critics.

Directorsnotes.com's Neil Fox named Late Blossom Blues his "Top Ten Feature Films 2017" list, writing:

“… Quite simply one of the best music documentaries I've ever seen, and I've seen a few. Incredibly moving and beautifully put together. "
