Men O 'War (German Movie Title: The sailor / Laurel and Hardy as sailors / Laurel and Hardy / Blue full sailors / warships guys in trouble ) is an American short film - comedy of comedy duo Laurel and Hardy . The film was made in 1929 and directed by Lewis R. Foster .

action

Stan and Ollie are sailors on shore leave who want to have a nice day in the idyllic park. They happen to find underwear and assume it belongs to one of the two attractive flapper girls they meet shortly afterwards. In fact, the women have lost something, albeit a glove. After an ambiguous dialogue between Ollie and the girls, the situation clears up when a police officer finds the glove. As an apology, Ollie invites the two women for a drink. However, Ollie realizes that she only has enough money for three drinks - so one of the two has to go empty-handed. Ollie decides to share the third drink with Stan, who promptly drinks the whole drink away. To the annoyance of both of them, the price of the drink is higher than initially thought, and the barman is now demanding his money, exasperated. With nothing to lose, Stan tosses one of his last coins into the bar's slot machines and hits the jackpot.

With the money they gained, Stan and Ollie rent a boat from the barman to take the two flapper girls for a trip across the lake. The sailors Stan and Ollie steer the boat very clumsily and soon collide with other boats. A fight ensues between the rowing boats in which all the other boats except that of the main culprits Stan and Ollie go down. Meanwhile, the angry barman calls a police officer for help, but the two end up in the water. All the people who fell into the water save themselves on Stan and Ollie's boat, which then goes down.

background

Men O 'War was only the third sound film by comedian duo Laurel and Hardy. It was shot in May 1929 and was released in American cinemas on June 29, 1929. Hollenbeck Park in Los Angeles was used as the filming location for most of the scenes , only the sequence in the bar was shot at Hal Roach Studios. The Hollenbeck Park still exists today, but the bridge that existed back then, for example, no longer exists.
