Below Zero (German Movie Title: Sub-Zero / Laurel and Hardy in a thousand hardships / sub Struggling notes / Laurel and Hardy as musicians ) is an American short film - comedy of James Parrott in 1930. The film stars the comedy duo plays Laurel and Hardy .
action
It's a freezing winter with snow in town, while Stan and Ollie buskers make their living playing the Tin Pan Alley song In the Good Old Summertime . After standing in front of an institute for the deaf for two hours and not getting a cent there, they try their luck at other places on the street. Here, however, they are repeatedly pelted with snowballs by the residents and driven away. During a snowball fight with a local resident, a snowball lands in the water bucket of a tall resident. She identifies Ollie as the culprit and smears a snowball in his face, causing Stan to knock the woman's bucket over. The woman then smashes Ollie's double bass and throws Stan's seated accordion into the street, where it is run over by a car.
At the seemingly low point, Stan and Ollie suddenly find a wallet on the sidewalk. Stan puts the wallet in his pocket, but the two are followed by a shady guy who apparently wants to take the wallet from them. Stan and Ollie get help from a policeman who drives the seedy man away. As a thank you, Ollie invites the policeman to dinner. You go to Pete's restaurant, who throws people out without money, and order a lot of great dishes there. While paying, Stan and Ollie discover the owner's picture in the found wallet: It's the policeman who thinks the two are particularly naughty thieves and betrays them to the landlord Pete. Pete throws Ollie on the street and stuffs Stan into a barrel of water. When Ollie takes Stan out of the water barrel, Stan has a supernaturally swollen stomach - he has drunk all the water.
background
Below Zero was filmed at Hal Roach Studios between February 17 and 28, 1930 and was released in American theaters on April 26, 1930. At the same time, a Spanish version of Below Zero was shot with the title Tiembla y Titubea . This is even a little longer at 27 minutes and contains, among other things, a scene in which the policeman talks to his superior and receives money from him in his wallet.
criticism
The Laurel and Hardy Central saw in Below Zero a very gloomy Laurel-and-Hardy film, both because of the behavior of others and because of the icy atmosphere and unrelenting snowfall. He would take the viewer on a roller coaster ride of emotions. The website Lordheath , which specializes in Hal Roach comedies, found that the film lacks speed in some places and that it appears relatively long for 20 minutes. However, it contained some of the most beautiful scenes, for example the fights with Charlie Hall and Blanche Payson and the scene with Stan's enlarged belly.
