Laurent-Guillaume de Koninck
Laurent-Guillaume de Koninck (born May 3, 1809 in Leuven , † July 16, 1887 in Liège ) was a Belgian paleontologist and chemist .
Life
He studied medicine at the University of Leuven and in 1831 became an assistant at the chair for chemistry. He continued his studies in Paris , Berlin and Giessen , and later taught in Ghent and Liège . In 1856 he was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Liège . He kept this post until the end of his life.
Around 1835 he began to devote his free time to researching the fossils of the carbonic coal limestone in the Liège area. Over time, he gained a reputation as an expert on Paleozoic fossils, primarily due to his descriptions of the molluscs , brachiopods , crustaceans and crinoids of the coal limestone of Belgium. In recognition of his achievements, the Geological Society of London awarded him the Wollaston Medal in 1875 , and in 1876 he was appointed Professor of Paleontology at the University of Liège. In 1882 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . The Royal Society of New South Wales awarded him the Clarke Medal in 1886 .
