Laurent Epstein

Laurent Epstein (* 1964 in Strasbourg ) is a French jazz pianist .

From the age of six, Epstein received classical piano lessons from Marguerite Perrat, herself a student of Alfred Cortot . Parallel to his studies at the IECS, he performed with jazz groups in France and Germany; he organized jam sessions in the Café des Anges in Strasbourg and played with musicians such as Roby Glod and Philippe Leclerc . At the same time he attended jazz courses with Bernard Maury . In 1990 he became a full-time musician; In 1992 he moved to Paris and performed with Laurence Masson, Vincent Artaud, Boris Blanchet, Pierrick Pédron and Renaud Penant. He played in Sunset or Le Petit Journal Montparnasse, later also in Le Caveau de la Huchette .

Epstein recorded his first albums with the quintet by Laurence Masson, the bands by Marc Rouvé, Valérie Hebey, Christine Caldi and Pierre Lévy. He also played in the Alexis Gruss circus orchestra. With his trio, which includes Yoni Zelnik and David Georgelet, he released his debut album En toute simplicité in 2010 . For his interpretation of L'Emeute by the poet André Prodhomme , which he performed with the reciter Philippe Valmont, he received a coup de cœur from the Académie Charles-Cros in 2010 . The live album Alone Together: Masaaki Mizugushi Meets Laurent Epstein Trio in Paris (2012) is mainly successful in Japan.

Epstein plays in the groups of the guitarist Patrick Saussois and also with Alma Sinti , Gianni Basso , Pierre Boussaguet, Richie Cole , Renato d'Aiello, Anne Ducros , Rachel Gould , Laurent Mignard , Christian Escoudé , Marc Fosset , Enrico Granafei, Tony Rabeson , Richard Raux, Harvey Thompson, Luigi Trussardi or Bob Stoloff . He also writes theater music.
