Laurent Nuñez (also Nunez , * 1964 in Bourges , Cher département ) is a French government official and politician. From 2017 to 2018 he was head of the domestic secret service Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI). He has been State Secretary in the French Ministry of the Interior since October 2018 .

Laurent Nuñez was born in Bourges into a family of pieds-noirs . Nuñez's mother was an elementary school teacher, his father an architect. Laurent Nuñez studied law in Tours and graduated with a license in general law and a maîtrise in public law . In 1987 he graduated from the École nationale des impôts ; He began his professional career in 1989 as a tax inspector.

After he had passed the internal admission concours of the elite administration college École nationale d'administration (ENA), he studied there from 1997 to 1999. He then continued to work in financial administration. From 2003 he worked in the prefecture of the Haute-Saône department before he took up a position in the French Ministry of the Interior in 2005 , where he was responsible for career affairs for prefects . In 2008 he took up a position in the Seine-Saint-Denis department as Directeur de cabinet of the local prefect in the main town of Bobigny . In his subsequent post as sub-prefect of Bayonne , he had to deal with the subject of terrorism for the first time in his professional activity, in connection with the Basque underground organization ETA .

In 2012 he returned to Paris, where he became Director of the Cabinet of Police in the capital . He held this position until 2015, when he became Police Prefect of the Bouches-du-Rhône department , i.e. the greater Marseille area . There he was significantly involved in the fight against gang crime.

In 2017 he became head of the active services of the National Police and DGSI , at whose head he replaced Patrick Calvar . Just over a year later, on October 16, 2018, President Emmanuel Macron appointed him State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior, at the same time as Christophe Castaner was appointed Minister of the Interior. The coordination of the police and intelligence services was named as Nuñez's main task in the appointment.
