Laurentius Hora

Laurentius Hora OSB (born October 3, 1900 in Pilsen as Erich Hora; † June 23, 1977 in Seckau ) was an Austrian scientist , educator , youth minister and organist .

life and work

Hora initially planned a career as an officer, but then decided to become an engineer. After completing his degree in mechanical engineering , he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Seckau in 1927 and then began to study philosophy and theology. In 1932 he was ordained a priest. In 1935 he enrolled at the university and the Graz University of Technology and studied psychology and education in addition to the natural sciences. His dissertation was refused by the National Socialists because he had been a religious since his ordination as a priest.

In addition to the office of youth pastor, retreat leader and religion teacher, Hora also held the position of organist. He was entrusted with the renovation of the large Maurach organ in Seckau ; the project was interrupted in 1940 when the Gestapo dissolved the abbey . After a short stay in the Beuron Archabbey , Hora was drafted into the armed forces in 1941 and used as a medical sergeant. Alongside and later he continued his artistic musical activity. After the end of the war, the project to redesign the organ could be started again in 1959. P. Laurentius developed extensive organ research. He left an extensive organographic collection.

After taking the teaching qualification in 1946, Hora taught mathematics , physics and descriptive geometry at the Stiftsgymnasium . As a reminder of his work, the "Seckau Talks" take place every year and deal with socio-political and theological topics.

He was a member of the MKV association Gothia Sekkau.
