Laurenz Meyer (entrepreneur)

Laurenz Meyer (baptized on September 25, 1800 in Herisau ; † April 10, 1868 there , entitled to live in Herisau) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician .

Life

Laurenz Meyer, son of the businessman and finishing owner Laurenz Meyer Senior and Anna Elisabeth, born Stricker, was baptized on September 25, 1800 in Herisau. Meyer was initially taught by private tutors in Herisau before completing an apprenticeship in his father's company.

As a result, the businessman and finish owner took over the management of his father's company in 1828, which he had expanded. The company, known as the "Medium Factory" , was both a manufacturing and trading company for Indian fabrics . In addition, Laurenz Meyer founded his own savings bank for the workers in his factory. In 1868 the management of the business was finally transferred to his half-brother Emanuel . In addition, in 1862 Laurenz Meyer gave the Herisau parish a piece of land for the construction of a barracks.

In 1822 he married Anna Elisabeth, the daughter of Johannes Knechtli. Laurenz Meyer died on April 10, 1868 at the age of 67 in Herisau.

Political career

At the political level, Meyer first served as councilor between 1828 and 1834 . He then worked from 1834 to 1836 as the Ausserrhoder regional cap master and from 1836 to 1839 as regional governor . At the same time, Meyer served as an auditor between 1834 and 1837. Subsequently, Laurenz Meyer worked from 1841 to 1846 as the treasurer of the cantonal fire insurance and from 1851 to 1855 in the state road commission. He also served in two district administrators between 1851 and 1856.

In 1839, Laurenz Meyer moved temporarily to St. Gallen to the election to Landammann to escape.
