Laurie Gold

Laurie Gold (born December 28, 1918 in London as Laurie Goldberg , † September 2000 in Essex ) was a British jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , arrangement ).

Live and act

Gold, whose parents came from Romania and Germany, grew up in the Leytonstore district of London . He went to school with Woolf Frank and Aubrey Frank. He started playing the alto saxophone at the age of 16, taking lessons from his brother, Harry Gold . He played first with the Ambassadors of Stan Atkins and Lew Foster (1937-38), then with Johnny Claes . He then worked in Hetty Booth's band and Tony Carr's Mellow Music before being drafted into military service in the fall of 1940. He spent his time as a soldier in various orchestras of the army, with which he also made recordings, and then after the mobilization ended he belonged to the groups of Eric Robinson and George Clouston. In 1946 he became a member of his brother's Pieces of Eight , to which he belonged until 1952, appeared on the BBC radio show Music While You Work and accompanied Hoagy Carmichael on his tour of Great Britain. After he only worked as manager of the band in the meantime, he took over his brother's band in 1956, which he led with an interruption from 1960 until the early 1960s. He then worked as a music producer and worked for EMI between 1966 and 1983 . After his retirement he occasionally performed with traveling bands in Clacton-on-Sea .
