Lawrence Christian Biedenharn (born November 18, 1922 in Vicksburg , Mississippi , † February 12, 1996 in Austin , Texas ) was an American theoretical nuclear physicist and mathematical physicist .

Biedenharn studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), interrupted from military service from 1942 to 1946 as a lieutenant in the Signal Corps in the Pacific theater of war, where he was stationed in Tokyo for one year in 1946 . After receiving his bachelor's degree in absentia from MIT, he returned to MIT after the war, where he received his doctorate under Victor Weisskopf in 1950 and also worked with nuclear physicist John Blatt . He then went to Oak Ridge National Laboratory , became Assistant Professor at Yale University, and Associate Professor at Rice University . From 1961 he was a professor at Duke University , where he became James B. Duke professor in 1987 and retired in 1992. He remained active in teaching and became an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin . In 1996 he died of kidney cancer in Austin.

He is known for his contributions to the quantum theory of angular momentum, especially in nuclear reactions and Coulomb excitations of nuclei (excitation of nuclei via the scattering of charged particles and their Coulomb interaction with the nucleus). Later he also dealt with representations of quantum groups. From 1985 to 1993 he was editor of the Journal of Mathematical Physics .

In 1958 he was a Fulbright Fellow and Guggenheim Fellow , he received the Jesse W. Beams Award and twice the Humboldt Research Award (1976, 1987). In 1960 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society

He had been married to lawyer Sarah Willingham since 1950 and had two children.
