Lawrence Katz

Lawrence Francis Katz (* 1959 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American economist .

Live and act

Katz graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with an AB in Economics in 1981 . 1986 doctorate he at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for Ph.D. From 1985 to 1986 he was an assistant professor at the School of Business Administration at the University of California, Berkeley, and from 1986 to 1991 assistant and associate professor at Harvard University , where he has been a full professor since 1991. He has also been doing research at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1985 and was Chief Economist at the United States Department of Labor from 1993 to 1994 . In 1999 he was a visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Katz works in the field of labor economics and the economics of social problems. In particular, he deals with income inequality , unemployment , theories on wage determination, educational economics , the impact of globalization and technological change on the labor market, the economy of social interactions, the economic effect of the birth control pill and the evaluation of the effectiveness of social and Labor market guidelines.

Awards

  • 1993 H. Gregg Lewis Prize for the best article in the Journal of Labor Economics ( Layoffs and Lemons . 1993).
  • 1999 Excellence in Mentoring Award (Harvard Graduate Student Council)
  • 2008 RR Hawkins Award "for the most Outstanding Professional, Reference, or Scholarly Work of 2008" (American Association of Publishers, for The Race between Education and Technology)
  • 2008 Richard A. Lester Prize "for the Outstanding Book in Labor Economics and Industrial Relations of 2008" (for The Race between Education and Technology)
  • 2020 IZA Prize in Labor Economics "for its outstanding scientific contributions to research into income inequality and the importance of education for success in the labor market"
