The League1 Ontario is a semi-professional men's soccer league in Ontario , Canada .

Established in 2013, the league was accepted by the Canadian Soccer Association and the Ontario Soccer Association as the third division in the Canadian league system. It is thus on a par with the United Soccer League and the Québec- based Première Ligue de soccer du Québec .

history

On November 13, 2013, League1 Ontario was founded by the Ontario Soccer Association. The purpose is to be able to develop and promote Canadian football players in the long term. The league itself is administered by DG Sports, which also looks after the amateur league Ontario Soccer League. It was published in advance that a majority of the players should be under 23 years of age and come from the youth league Ontario Premier Development League.

On April 8, 2014, the ten teams from the first season were presented. At the end of the 2014 season, Toronto FC Academy was the winner of the regular season. Vaughan Azzurri was able to win the cup and is therefore the first champion of the league.

mode

The season usually runs from May to October each year. Each team plays 22 games, divided into 11 home and 11 away games. The team with the highest number of points after 22 match days is the champions of the league.

The League1 Ontario Cup runs parallel to the league. Here the teams are divided into four groups. The respective group winners and runners-up play the winner of the cup in a knockout process.

Regulations

The league was founded with a number of rules and requirements to ensure in the long term that it is primarily about the development of young football players:

  • All teams are entitled to play via a license model, which must be renewed every year. There is no franchise or ownership process as is common in other North American leagues.
  • There can be a maximum of three non-Canadian players on a team.
  • The roster consists of 18 players, with at least 8 players under the age of 23.
  • In the respective starting eleven, at least 4 players must be under 23 years of age.
  • A maximum of 5 changes can be made during a game.
