Leatrice Joy (actually Leatrice Johanna Zeidler ; born November 7, 1896 in New Orleans , † May 13, 1985 in Riverdale , New York ) was an American actress of the silent and early sound film era .

Career

Leatrice Joy made her debut in 1915 as an extra in a small film company Nola Film Company in New Orleans. Two years later she moved to Hollywood , where she was under contract with Samuel Goldwyn . With her appearance in The Pride of the Clan , she became known alongside Mary Pickford in 1917 and quickly rose to become a popular actress for Goldwyn Studios. Until 1920 she was often seen alongside Wallace Beery , Conrad Nagel , Nita Naldi and Irene Rich . Leatrice Joy's career culminated when she signed with Paramount Pictures , where she was one of the favorite stars of Cecil B. DeMille , who used her in hit films like The Ten Commandments , Saturday Night and Manslaughter . In 1922 Leatrice Joy married her colleague John Gilbert , who was just beginning his career at the time. The couple divorced shortly after their daughter Leatrice Joy Fountain was born in 1924. The actress ended her collaboration with DeMille in 1928 and signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , but her career ended with the rise of the talkie. Her southern accent proved to be a handicap. Leatrice Joy returned to the big screen only sporadically over the next few years.

Leatrice Joy spent the last years of her life in seclusion in Greenwich , Connecticut . She died of anemia in Riverdale on November 7, 1985 and was buried in Old Greenwich Cemetery . A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame commemorates the actress.
