Paths of Life - the online migration museum Rhineland-Palatinate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paths of life - the online migration museum Rhineland-Palatinate is an exclusively digital museum of the Rhineland-Palatinate state government, which primarily uses contemporary witness videos to show the migration history of Rhineland-Palatinate in the sense of oral history . Lebenswege was the first in its founding year 2009 and is still the only purely virtual migration museum run by a state government in Germany. When it was founded, it was also one of the first digital museums in Germany. The Ministry for Family, Women, Youth, Integration and Consumer Protection of Rhineland-Palatinate is responsible for the editorial work for life paths . The media partner of the virtual museum is SWR International.

Content of the museum

Ways of life presents two permanent exhibitions: one for the Rhineland-Palatinate labor migration history, the other on the history of Russian Germans , entitled The Russian-German House . The latter exhibition is based on the real touring exhibition Das Russlands-Deutsche Haus , which the Evangelical Church of Westphalia developed and which from 2003 to 2014 attracted over 100,000 visitors to more than 70 exhibition locations across Germany. With the takeover of “Das Russlands-Deutsche Haus”, the online museum preserved the analogue exhibition in virtual space. In addition, the digital museum offers special exhibitions, most of which deal with the recruitment agreements of the economic boom , but also with the topic of refugees. In 2016, Lebenswege presented a special exhibition on the migration history of Rheinhessen on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of this Rhineland-Palatinate region, which inspired the writer Carl Zuckmayer , who originally came from there, to use the concept of his peoples mill in Europe . Visitors from more than 70 countries have now visited the Internet Museum. Lebenswege also receives regular reporting in Rhineland-Palatinate and national media.

Life paths as an object of science

The Rhineland-Palatinate Migration Museum is itself the subject of scientific research. For example, Lebenswege was part of a symposium organized by the Documentation Center and Museum on migration in Germany , is the subject of scientific lectures or is part of scientific work. In 2013, Lebenswege also organized a nationwide symposium on the subject of "Migration history in museums" in cooperation with the Mainz State Museum. The museum is now also part of didactic material for teachers and a topic in school books.

Life paths on site

Under the motto Lives on Site , the digital museum presents itself again and again in the real world, for example through discussions with contemporary witnesses from the museum. Here was life paths even in analog museums visits, such as the Landesmuseum Mainz at the Mainz Museum Night or the Documentation Center of German democracy movement Hambach Castle . The online museum is also regularly used as a teaching object at schools in Rhineland-Palatinate and also actively visits them.
