Christian Gottlob Leberecht Rebenstein (born October 29, 1788 in Berlin ; † October 22, 1832 there ) was a German theater actor and opera singer ( tenor ) at the Berlin National Theater .

Life

His father was the Berlin cantor, organist and composer Benjamin Friedrich Rebenstein. Rebenstein worked at the Berlin Royal National Theater from 1803 (from 1811 Royal Drama). He was a student of August Wilhelm Iffland , who encouraged him very much. Rebenstein played more than 160 roles under Iffland's direction. One of his first roles was the Gregori in August von Kotzebue's play Count Benjowsky or the conspiracy on Kamchatka (October 11, 1803). One of his most successful roles was "André" in Kotzebue's adaptation of the French singspiel Fanchon das Leyermädchen , for which the Berlin composer Friedrich Heinrich Himmel had composed new music. The premiere took place on May 16, 1804. There is a pictorial representation of his acting skills from his role as "Royal Fool" in Shakespeare's drama King Lear . In the 3rd scene of the 3rd act he can be seen together with Iffland as "Lear".

In the Vossische Zeitung in Berlin on June 6, 1811 it says on:

“Don Carlos finds Hern, precisely because of the inequality of this role. Rebenstein a happy actor, full of truth and worth. Carlos was written in a youthful way by Schiller, given in a youthful manner by Mr. Rebenstein, without artistic power, without presumptuousness, without any real connection; with the force of nature, with fire, irregularly, and all the more aptly. It is not Mr. Rebenstein's first, but indisputably one of his first roles, which he can boldly leave himself to us. "

On June 18, 1821, he sang “Ottokar” at the world premiere of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz in Berlin.

Leberecht Rebenstein died just a week before his 44th birthday on October 22, 1832 in Berlin. His grave, which has not been preserved, was in one of the cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor . It is not known exactly which one.
