Location of the Lechrain barracks in Bavaria |
The Lechrain barracks was a barracks of the armed forces on the territory of the town of Landsberg am Lech in Upper Bavaria . The approx. 18 hectare area is located south of the populated urban area on federal highway 17 between Landsberg and the Unterdießen district of Dornstetten .
After the construction of the barracks, the tank battalion 243 of the tank brigade 24 was transferred to the barracks and subordinated to the mountain rifle brigade 224 as a mountain tank battalion . When the brigade was dissolved in 1993, the battalion was also dissolved and the barracks closed.
After the disbandment of the mountain tank battalion 224, the mountain observation artillery battalion 83 moved into the Lechrain barracks in April 1993 . The battalion was deactivated again at the end of 1996. The airborne teaching and test company 909 of the airborne and air transport school in Altenstadt used the barracks until 2001.
After the barracks were closed, the city of Landsberg am Lech took over the facility and converted the site into an industrial and commercial area in 2001.
South of the barracks is the training area Landsberger garrison .
