Lehanga or Lehenga ( Urdu , Gujarati or Punjabi gaghra , English half saree ) refers to a floor-length women's garment in the north-west of the Indian subcontinent ( Gujarat , Rajasthan ) that is visually similar to the sari . As with the sari, there are everyday and holiday lehangas.

description

A lehanga consists of a floor-length, sweeping skirt with waist cuffs and wide hem borders as well as a separate shoulder wrap or veil ( dupatta ) , sometimes of a different color ; In addition there is an underskirt and a mostly short-sleeved jacket ( choli ) .

history

The generally wide-ranging waistband skirt of the Lehanga resembles in many respects the skirts of the gypsy women , whose historic home as migrant workers is probably to be found in northwestern India. Lehangas are now sometimes worn at festive events in the larger cities in the west or north of India ( Mumbai , Delhi ).
