The teaching studio for experimental animation film was founded in 1982 by the Austrian artist Maria Lassnig as part of her appointment as professor for painting at the then University of Applied Arts Vienna as the first and so far only teaching studio for animation film in Austria. According to Lassnig's ideas, painting should be set in motion here.

As a studio for experimental animation film, the only experimental film studio at Austria's art universities until a few years ago still exists today and is affiliated to the Institute of Fine and Media Art of Applied Sciences. The painting and animation film course has been headed by the New York artist Judith Eisler since 2009. She succeeded Christian Ludwig Attersee , who had taken over the master class for experimental design - and thus also the animation studio - from Maria Lassnig in 1990.
