The Lehrter model is a project for health prevention in schools, especially for the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus .

background

Book cover "Very healthy instead of round balls - Lehrter model since 2001", 2009

The diabetes epidemic is a consequence of the western lifestyle, which is characterized by less and less exercise and incorrect (over) nutrition . In Germany, the diabetes incidence is estimated at 10%. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was also known as old-age diabetes. This form of diabetes increases the most between the ages of 20 and 40. Children are also increasingly affected.

In the meantime, science and politics have recognized the need to provide information at an early stage and to work towards changing behavior: healthy eating and sufficient exercise. National specialist societies are planning appropriate programs that could slow down or even reverse this development. In contrast, they are trading in Lehrte - so far without any example in Germany. "

Development and content

The idea for this project goes back to Wolfgang Leder. He was himself a long-time diabetic, head of a diabetic self-help group, founder of the German Diabetes Museum and former state chairman of the German Diabetic Association (DDB) in Baden-Württemberg.

The Lehrter model was founded by Gernot-Rainer Storm (diabetologist) and Jürgen Teiwes (school director at Ori Lehrte Süd). It was organized for the first time in 2001 on World Diabetes Day with 400 pupils in grades 5 and 6 as a one-day project. In the meantime, a curriculum for the Lehrter model was developed over three days. The main contents of the project are healthy eating, sport and exercise, gestational diabetes (gestational diabetes) and an encounter with diabetics in school.

Ms. Heidrun Frohloff-Kulke developed the current curriculum. In one of their seminar specialist courses, the data from the last projects were evaluated and the project was described in detail (including the curriculum and the administrative work on the part of the school). It was published in 2009 as a book with the title “Healthy as a core instead of round balls - The Lehrter model since 2001”. A free e-book version can be downloaded from the Internet. This publication serves as a template for further projects of this kind throughout Germany.

target group

The project is a model for all school types, particularly suitable for grades 5 and 6 (pupils between 10 and 13 years of age). Several schools in Lower Saxony have already implemented this project; In Lehrte , over 4,000 children have attended secondary schools, secondary schools and high schools since the beginning.

Data collected

During the project days 2004–2008, surveys and measurements were used to collect data on the leisure activities and physical activity of children in schools and kindergartens. Unfortunately, they also confirm the general trend towards an unhealthy lifestyle. The determined data can be viewed on the Internet.
