A frock coat (outdated body skirt ) is a late form of the men's skirt , a double-breasted jacket with a knee-length, attached lap made of mostly dark cloth , which was especially worn on festive occasions in the 19th century.

In contrast to the actual jacket, men's skirts consist of a top and knee-length laps attached by means of a waist seam. Today, a frock coat is also a figure-hugging, tailored, long jacket, also known as an overjacket or overcoat . The terms long jacket or long jacket are also used less frequently .

history

The result is the frock coat in 1800 from the Justaucorps the Rococo , which in the construction of the jerkins back of the 17th century.

After 1820, the elegant frock coat, the successor to the mostly brightly colored Biedermeier tailcoat, was heavily tailored and padded in the chest and hip area, which only meant that it was worked on a horsehair insert. 19th century tailors called this insert padding .

It was often worn openly, with a matching or sticking vest underneath, as well as dark striped trousers, a shirt with a button-up flap collar and a cylinder . Its famous bearers include Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich von Schiller , Abraham Lincoln , Johann Strauss father , Johann Strauss son and Eduard Strauss . From around 1870 the dark frock coat was the official clothing of ministers, councilors of commerce, doctors and business people. They also wore a plastron instead of a tie .

The frock coat was jokingly referred to as a roast skirt because it was only worn on festive occasions in the end .

Towards the end of the 19th century, the skirt was replaced by the - in principle not tailored - jacket , with the original jacket as a transition form.

Modifications

A special kind of frock coat is the Luther rock . This is a black, single-row buttoned, high-necked frock coat with a small stand-up collar . Some clergymen (usually bishops) wear it as an official costume outside of worship.

The frock coat gained new, short-term popularity through the films Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions , in which the protagonist Neo wears a black frock coat modeled on the Luther skirt, which differs from the original mainly through a higher stand-up collar and a longer, ankle-length cut.
