Systematics
Class : Insects (Insecta)
Order : Beetle (Coleoptera)
Subordination : Polyphaga
Partial order : Staphyliniformia
Superfamily : Staphylinoidea
Family : Leiodidae
Scientific name
Leiodidae
Fleming , 1821
The eighth antenna segment is characteristic of most species of the Leiodidae . It is shorter than the seventh and the ninth (here in the genus Zenocolon ).

The Leiodidae are a family of beetles within the superfamily of the Staphylinoidea . Originally it only included the sponge ball beetles , which are now grouped together in the subfamily Leiodinae. Other beetle families such as the nest beetles , the colonist beetles and the fur flea beetles have been incorporated into the family Leiodidae as subfamilies over time.

features

The Leiodidae are all very small beetles. They reach a length between just under one and a maximum of seven millimeters in length. In many cases, their eyes are reduced or completely absent, which has to do with the hidden, sometimes subterranean way of life of most species. Many species are flightless, they have lost their hind wings in the course of tribal history. The color is inconspicuous, light brown to translucent.

distribution

Most of the subfamilies of the Leiodidae are distributed worldwide, with a main focus on the northern hemisphere in the Holarctic region.

Systematics

After a revision by Al Newton in 1998, the family Leiodidae is divided into six subfamilies. These subfamilies used to be separate families and many authors continue to keep them as families.
