Thomas Leonard "Len" Apsey (born February 11, 1910 in Ynyshir , † May 24, 1967 in Caerphilly ) was a Welsh football player .

Career

Apsey, who was active as a player for Trethomas Bluebirds in the early 1930s, came in September 1930 as a test player for AFC Newport County , for which he ran up on September 25, 1930 in a reserve game as a right winger. The Western Mail correspondent noted of Apsey's appearance: “Apsey has done extremely well with the limited opportunities on the far right. The winger definitely deserves an extended probationary period. ”Just two days later, he made his debut for Newport's first team, with coach Jimmy Hindmarsh pitching him as a center forward for a game in the Football League Third Division South . The team at the bottom of the table achieved their second win of the season in their eighth game with a 3-1 home win against Southend United . Apsey did not score a goal of his own, but his performance was praised by the press: “He was maybe clumsy in a lot of what he did, but he always tried. He didn't score, but he got close to it many times and worried the opposing defenders. His ball distribution and control were pretty good and under more favorable conditions he should give an even better performance. "

Apsey was also called up in the following away game against Luton Town , but in the 1: 3 defeat the amateur player fell short of expectations, was taken from the center-forward position in the course of the game and then relegated to the reserve team after the game. In December 1930, Newport's registration with the Football League was canceled. Further games in the Football League did not follow. At the end of December he was a test player at Burnley FC in a reserve match against Manchester United (final score 1: 1), and the press confirmed that he had “justified” his line-up. In August 1931 he was invited to a trial by Arsenal FC , he came with the recommendation of nearly 100 goals this season in senior football from Monmouthshire .

In the following years he was active for several teams in Welsh football. In the fall of 1932, his name appears several times in the Cardiff City reserve team , for which he also scored a hat trick against Aberaman Athletic . Caerphilly Town he excelled in season 1933-34 repeated as scorer, so he scored four goals in the October 1933 Welsh League Challenge Cup against Treharris (final score 6: 4) followed in November 1933 in a match for the Welsh Cup against Llanbradach five hits (final score 7: 2). From early 1935 through the fall of 1936, his name appeared repeatedly in match reports from Porth United. Previously, he is said to have been active at Lovell's Athletic . From April 1936 he was back at Caerphilly, with whom he played in Division 1 of the Welsh League in the 1936/37 season. In February 1937 he met with Caerphilly in the league on the reserves of Newport County and scored the consolation goal of his team in the 1:10 defeat.
