Ripe grapes from Len de l'El in Gaillac

The Len de l'El is a white wine , which mainly in the southwest French wine-growing region of Gaillac is grown.

The Len de l'El delivers fragrant, rather low-acid wines. It is mostly developed dry or used as a base wine for the production of sparkling wine . The grape variety does not appear to be suitable for aging in barriques , but it delivers very good Auslese wines with fine fruit reminiscent of pears or peaches. The Len de l'El is sensitive to late frosts. Due to the lower yields it was neglected in Gaillac compared to the Mauzac for a long time. Its share of the cultivated area was only 1.6% in 1960, but rose again to 20% by 1990. In 2007 a planted vineyard area of 647 hectares was raised.

The name comes from Occitan and means "far from the eye". This refers to the fact that the grapes have very long stems and are therefore far away from the "eye", i.e. the bud from which they grew. In French it is called accordingly Loin de l'oeil .

Synonyms: Lenc de l'El, Len de l'Elh, Len del el, Lendelel, Cavaillèes, Cavalié, Cavalier.
