Lengeder ponds

As Lengeder ponds , the water-filled are opencast mining holes of the iron ore mine Mathilde in Lower Saxony City Lengede in district Peine called. Here was Eisenstein mined . Several of the ponds are located in the nature reserve Lengeder ponds , some are in the conservation area "Lengede-Broistedt".
Emergence
When the opencast mines were cleared out, the ore was mined underground . A large underground route network was created . So were in the middle of the 20th century directly through Lengede the head frames of manholes to see Anna (1912-1959) and Mathilde (1921-1977). After the production stopped, the remaining holes were flooded.
Not far from the ponds is the cable car mountain , the spoil dump of the Anna and Mathilde pits.
Mine disaster
The remains of clarification pond 12 are located under one of these ponds. Approximately 500,000 m³ of water from this clarification pond ran into the mine on October 24, 1963 at around 8:00 p.m. and caused the Lengede mine disaster . After 14 days, eleven miners were rescued from the "Old Man" , what became known as the Lengede miracle .
