Meierott's whitebeam ( Sorbus meierottii )

Lenz Meierott received his doctorate in 1974 on small flute types in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Until 2007 he was a full-time musicologist at the University of Music Würzburg , where he was a professor. The composer and violinist Florian Meierott is his son.

In addition to his main job, Lenz Meierott earned a reputation as an excellent expert on flora, especially in his Franconian homeland. In addition to extensive mappings of all vascular plant species in the area, he created, among other things, several initial descriptions of small species of the whitebeam and blackberry genera :

This work was recognized by the fact that the species Meierott's whitebeam ( Sorbus meierottii N. Mey. ) And Meierott's blackberry ( Rubus meierottii H. E. Weber ) were named after him.

In 2009 he received the Academy Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and in 2015 he was awarded the Bavarian State Medal for special services to the environment .
