Leonardus "Leo" Ghering (born August 19, 1900 in Tilburg ; † April 1, 1966 ) was a Dutch football player who stormed for TSV LONGA in the 1920s . With the Tilburg team he won the cup in 1926 . He came nine times in 1927 and 1928 in the national team and scored six goals for the Oranje Elftal .

Club career

The left half- forward - who later often played in the center-forward position - has probably been a member of the club since the establishment of TSV LONGA in 1920. With the club he rose to the tweede class in 1923 . One of the highlights of his club career was winning the Dutch Cup final on June 13, 1926. In the 5-2 victory of the second division in Utrecht against De Spartaan Amsterdam , Ghering contributed to the 3-0 and 4-0 goals in his regular position on the half-left. In the same year LONGA finished second in the second division behind PSV Eindhoven . In 1928 he was promoted to first class. Ghering turned down solicitation offers from local rival Willem II and stayed with LONGA even after his active career, which ended in the early 1930s.

National team

Since 1922, ghering had repeatedly been used in regional selection teams. In February 1927, the selection committee appointed him for the first time to training games for the Olympic team in the run-up to the Olympic Games in his own country. On March 13, 1927, he drove with the senior team to Antwerp to play against Belgium , but was not yet used. It was not until the next match in Amsterdam against Czechoslovakia that bond coach Bob Glendenning sent him onto the field - Ghering thanked him with three goals in front of 30,000 spectators in the Oude Stadium in the 8-1 win. Ghering was also allowed to compete in the next duel with Belgium that followed 13 days later, but this time he did not score. He could not travel to the away game against Denmark in Copenhagen in June because his employer did not release him, but in the summer he took part in other training games of the Olympic selection. In November 1927 he returned to the A-Elf; he scored the only goal of the game against Sweden and also ran on November 20, 1927 in Cologne in a 2-2 draw against Germany in Oranje .

In February 1928 he again took part in the training of the Olympic team and was also appointed to the final squad. In the Olympic football tournament, the hosts and Ghering in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam were defeated by the reigning Olympic champion and then successful defending champion Uruguay in the first round 2-0. In the consolation round, the Elftal met again on the "arch rivals" Belgium, which they defeated 3-1, with Ghering scoring the opening goal in the fourth minute. In the final of this competition of four losers from the first main round and quarter-finals, the Netherlands faced Chile . After goals from Ghering and Felix Smeets , the match ended in a 2-2 draw on June 8, 1928 in front of 18,000 spectators in Rotterdam ; The Oranje team was declared the winner by drawing lots. Ghering came in the two friendlies that followed in the same year to use, but scored no further goal.
