Leo Samuele Olschki (born as Lev Samuel Olschki January 8, 1861 in Johannisburg , East Prussia ; died June 17, 1940 in Geneva , Switzerland ) was a German-Italian book antiquarian and publisher .

Life

Olschki was born into a family of Jewish book printers. He learned the book trade in Berlin and married Pauline Rosen (* 1862 in Warsaw, † 1895 in Venice). They had six children, including the Romanist Leonardo Olschki . The sons Cesare and Aldo later continued the business.

In 1885 Olschki went to Verona . There he founded a bookshop and moved with it to Venice in the next few years and to Florence in 1897 , where he had his business on Lungarno degli Acciaiuoli in 1911 . He founded the magazine L'Algheri , which he later renamed Il Giornale dantesco , and from 1899 published the illustrated monthly La Bibliofilia . He was considered an important expert on incunabula in Italy. He founded the Leo S. Olschki publishing house, which specialized in art historical writings. He published the 71-volume Inventari dei Manoscritti delle Biblioteche d'Italia .

When Italy entered the First World War in 1915, Olschki escaped internment as an enemy foreigner by evading to Geneva in Switzerland. In 1925 he received Italian citizenship. When the Mussolini regime passed anti-Jewish racial laws in 1938 , he fled again to Switzerland.
