Leo Witoszynskyj (born June 23, 1941 in Vienna ; † October 1, 2008 in Graz ) was an Austrian guitarist and university professor for guitar at the Graz University of Art .

Life

Witoszynskyj grew up in Vienna-Josefstadt. From 1956 to 1964 he studied guitar with Luise Walker at the Vienna Music Academy and obtained his diploma in 1964 with distinction. In 1961, 1963 and 1965 he took part in master classes with Andrés Segovia and Narciso Yepes .

In addition to studying guitar, he studied law at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in law in 1966.

He made his concert debut in Nuremberg in 1964. From 1964 he taught at the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna and from 1964 at the Graz Music Academy (which later became the University of Music and Music and is now Graz University of Art). From 1974 he was ao in Graz. Professor, from 1980 full professor, from 1980 to 1988 he was also deputy rector.

In 1968 he won the 1st International Guitar Competition in Alessandria (Italy).

His lively concert activity took him all over the world - with recitals, as a chamber musician and soloist with renowned orchestras. In addition, he was called in as a juror for numerous important competitions. A large number of LP, MC and CD recordings consolidated his excellent reputation.

His concert tours have taken him to numerous European (including Germany, England, Italy, Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine) and non-European countries (including Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, USA, Venezuela). He played with the flautist Gottfried Hechtl, the guitarist Timothy Walker, the pianist Rosario Marciano, the singer Ira Malaniuk, the violinist Ostap Shutko, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Birmingham City Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Witoszynskyj was married to Eleonore Witoszynskyj (née Kujal) and had two sons.
