Leon Black

Leon Black (* 1951 ) is an American entrepreneur and art collector . He specializes in leveraged buyouts and private equity . In 1990 he founded the private equity firm Apollo Global Management .

family

Black comes from a Jewish family. His father was the American investment dealer Elihu Menashe Black (1921–1975) and his mother was the artist Shirley Lubell. Black is married to Debra Ressler and has four children. Debra is a melanoma survivor. In 2007, the couple donated $ 25 million to create the new Melanoma Research Alliance.

Life

Black studied philosophy and history at Dartmouth College and business administration at Harvard University . In his early career, he worked for Drexel Burnham Lambert investment bank . After Drexel announced bankruptcy, Black founded Apollo Global Management with Joshua Harris and Marc Rowan in 1990 . Apollo manages $ 269 billion in assets. The company went public in 2011; Black still owns about 21% of the company.

He sits on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art .

According to Forbes, his personal wealth is $ 6.5 billion (as of November 2018).

Art collection

The pastel version The Scream of 1895 by the painter Edvard Munch was sold to Leon Black at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on May 2, 2012 for US $ 119,922,500. That was the highest price for a work of art ever achieved at an auction.

In June 2013 it was announced that Leon Black, the 11-inch-wide work after a four-party bidding war for 29 million pounds Head of a Young Apostle of Raphael bought.

On December 22, 2015, it was reported that Leon Black had bought a complete set of the Babylonian Talmud from Daniel Bomberg at auction for $ 9.3 million.
