Daniel Bomberg

Daniel Bomberg (* 1470/80 in Antwerp ; † 1549 ibid) was a Flemish printer and publisher of Hebrew books during the Renaissance . The Jewish Lexicon describes him as "one of the most important Hebrew book printers of all time".

Life

Bomberg was born in Antwerp between 1470 and 1480, went to Venice in 1516 and began to publish commented and uncommented rabbinical Bibles ( large Bomberg Bible , Venice 1524/1525, essentially based on the text of the Masoretician Aaron ben Ascher , who also wrote the Had found approval of Maimonides ).

He was also the first publisher of the complete edition of the Babylonian Talmud (1520-23; the second edition was completed in 1531) and employed - since he was a Christian himself - Jewish scholars who could edit Jewish-religious literature . By 1549 he had published over 200 works in Hebrew.

His first print fixes the external form of the prints of all subsequent editions of the Babylonian Talmud to this day by introducing the folio numbering: the beginning of each treatise on sheet 2, since sheet 1 is reserved for the title page. The front and back of each sheet are counted as "a" and "b". The page layout remains the same for all editions, as does the addition of the Rashi comment on the inside of the text and the tosafot on the outside.

Bomberg was wealthy and well educated. He spoke Hebrew himself and was highly respected by the Jews . As a proofreader Elijah Levita worked with him, but with whom he fell out. In 1539 Bomberg had to return to Antwerp, where he died.
