After the First World War , the family moved to Germany and lived in Berlin from 1921. Here Nebenzahl attended a German-Russian secondary school . The family went bankrupt in the early 1930s. Nebenzahl had to stop studying chemistry in Berlin for lack of money. During National Socialism , Nebenzahl was banned from working in 1933. While he was making a living doing arts and crafts , he delayed his "Aryanization process" by linking his illegitimate birth with doubts about fatherhood. He was considered an illegitimate foreigner. In 1944 he was pressured by the immigration police to have himself declared a “full Aryan” and thus also to be conscripted. He decided to uncover his origins and, as a " half- breed" in the sense of the Nuremberg Laws , was forced to do compulsory service in the Todt Organization in Thuringia in November 1944 . In April 1945 he fled to Berlin.

From May 1945 Nebenzahl worked as an interpreter for the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) in Berlin and from summer 1945 as an employee of the Soviet News Office (SNB). He translated SMAD announcements for the SNB and interpreted at press conferences. From 1946 he also worked as a publishing translator for SMA-Verlag, for whom he translated, among other things, the indictment of the Soviet main prosecutor in the Nuremberg trial of the main war criminals .

After the dissolution of the SNB, Nebenzahl was transferred to the Office for Information (AfI) of the GDR in 1950 , where he published the press service The Press of the Soviet Union and the People's Democracies until 1958 . In 1957 he attended the party college "Karl Marx" for a year . He then took over the editor-in-chief of the German edition of the international magazine Problems of Peace and Socialism until 1981 .

Nebenzahl translated textbooks on Marxism-Leninism , economics and history, memoirs of Soviet diplomats, military and politicians such as Valentin Bereshkow , Iwan Maiski , Kliment Voroshilov , but also fiction, including works by Vasily Grossman .
