Leon Negruzzi
Leon (von) Negruzzi (born June 5, 1840 in Iași , † July 16, 1890 in Trifești ) was a Romanian lawyer, poet, novelist and translator.
Life
Negruzzi received his first lessons at home. In 1852 he and his brother Iacob Negruzzi were sent to Berlin for further schooling , where he completed his high school education. He attended lectures in philosophy and law at the universities of Vienna University and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . However, he finished his studies without a degree. From 1859 he was a member of the Corps Neoborussia Berlin and Marchia Halle . In 1864 he became a judge at the Court of Justice in Iași, later Attorney General ( procurorul general ) at the Court of Appeal ( Curtea de Apel ). He was also mayor and prefect of Iași from 1871 to 1876 . He was later a senator and from 1888 again Prefect of Iași. He was Dr. iur. and President of the Court of Justice. In addition to his professional career, Negruzzi wrote numerous works of fiction, mainly novels and short stories . His first short story, Vântul soartei , appeared in the Junimii magazine in 1867 . Negruzzi was a member of the Societatea Junimea , a Romanian literary society founded in Iași in 1863, the aim of which was to preserve the Romanian language in its cultural tradition and to protect it from foreign linguistic influences.
Negruzzi's novels, many of them adventure novels , are among the most successful books in Romanian literature of the second half of the 19th century.
