Leonard Barden

Leonard William Barden (born August 20, 1929 in Croydon , London ) is a British chess player , columnist and author .

Life

The son of a garbage collector studied at Balliol College , Oxford. In 1951/52 and 1957/58 he took 4th place at the Hastings chess tournament . In 1946 he won the British Junior Correspondence Chess Olympiad. In 1954 he was British individual champion together with Alan Phillips . Barden participated with the English national team in the Chess Olympiads in 1952 , 1954 , 1960 and 1962 . He annotated all games of the 1972 World Chess Championship for the BBC . From 1973 to 1978 he co-hosted the annual Master Games on BBC2 . Barden has published more than twenty other books since his first book, A Guide to Chess Openings (1957).

Barden is the longest-serving chess columnist in the world. He has been writing for The Guardian since September 1955, for the Evening Standard since 1956 and for the Financial Times since 1974 . In his Guardian column on February 24, 1975, Barden correctly predicted that the then eleven-year-old Garry Kasparov would be world chess champion in 1990.
