Leonardo Taran

Leonardo Tarán (born February 22, 1933 in Galarza, Argentina ) is an American classical philologist .

Life

The son of Miguel and Liuba Taran came to the United States in 1958 and was naturalized in 1976. He received a PhD in philosophy from Princeton University in 1962 . He became a Junior Fellow at the University of Wisconsin's Institute of Research in Humanities in 1962 . A year later he took the same position at the Center for Hellenic Studies . In 1964, Tarán became Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of California.

Also in 1967 he was a member of the classics faculty at Columbia University. In 1971 he became Professor of Greek and Latin and Jay Professor of Greek and Latin in 1987 at the same university. In addition, Tarán was from 1976 to 1979 chairman of the department for classics at this university. Since 2004 he has been a professor emeritus at Columbia University.
