Charles Anthon

Charles Anthon (born November 19, 1797 in New York City , New York , † July 29, 1867 ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

George Christian Anthon was a German physician who served during the American Revolution until the 1788 defeat in Detroit . He rose to the rank of general physician , married the daughter of a French officer, and settled in New York City.

His son Charles began studying law after graduating from Columbia College in 1815 and was admitted to the bar in 1819, but never practiced. In 1820 he was appointed assistant professor of Greek and Latin at his old college, and ten years later he was made full professor. At the same time he was headmaster of the grammar school, which was then part of his college, Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School , a position he held until 1864.

Anthon was also involved in an authenticity discussion regarding a fragment of Joseph Smith 's translation of the Book of Mormon , known as the Anthon Transcript .

Edgar Allan Poe was one of his social friends .

Anthon produced a large number of annotated school editions by Latin and Greek authors, as well as teaching and reference books for school and college use, which remained in use for a long time, although they were less popular with school teachers because of their numerous aids. An example is A Manual of Greek Literature from the Earliest Authentic Periods to the Close of Byzantine Era , a work that listed all Greek authors in this period, including a short biography and bibliography.

Anthons work was continued by his successor Henry Drisler (1818-1897).
