Diefenbach's work is very extensive. His children's, youth and drawing textbooks, which were published by Thienemann in Stuttgart or Scholz in Mainz from 1855, are well known. A myriad of drawings, watercolors and oil paintings of Nassau views are just as much a part of his work as landscapes and portraits. His hometown was one of his favorite subjects. Emperor Franz Josef of Austria was the first artist to award Diefenbach the gold medal for art and science. The occasion was a watercolor that the arrival of the emperor in front of Schloss Biebrich showed on 21 August. 1863 He spent his twilight years painting with Duke Adolf von Nassau in Lenggries, where he also died.
