Leonhard Mennicken

Leonhard Mennicken (born September 1, 1874 in Raeren ; † November 11, 1969 there ) was a German-Belgian sculptor .

Life

Leonhard Mennicken's father was a stone cutter. He also had an older brother. Even as a child, Leonhard drew pictures of saints. In Aachen he did an apprenticeship as a sculptor and went to the Aachen School of Applied Arts . He then continued his education with Karl Krauss at RWTH Aachen University and founded his own studio in Aachen in 1899, which he relocated to Raeren in 1918.

Leonhard Mennicken mainly created sacred works of art, which can be found mainly in the Eifel and Rhineland, including:

  • 1893: Stone relief for the Church of St. Remigius in Viersen
  • 1902: Way of the Cross for the Church of St. Peter and Pankratius in Konzen
  • 1907: High altar for the Gross St. Arnold Church in Arnoldsweiler
  • 1922–1923: Memorial altar for the warrior chapel in Eynatten
  • between 1921 and 1932: crucifix, benches and warrior altar in the Nikolaus-Kirche Raeren
  • 1932: War memorial in Raeren
  • 1961: Belle Croix
