Athletic career

In Orlishausen , Thuringia , Leonhard Urban began playing organized football at the age of six. When he started an apprenticeship, he joined the company sports community (BSG) Motor Eisenach . With the BSG, he made it to the second-rate GDR league in 1962 . For the 1962/63 season he was delegated to the top division club SC Turbine Erfurt to focus on football in the region. There he played the first two Bundesliga point games as a left winger, but lost this position to Gerhard Heidner . Then coach Wolfgang Seifert tried itwith Urban on the 8th and 9th matchday as right winger, but then no longer used him in the major league. After the winter break, Urban returned to Motor Eisenach, where he played eleven GDR league games by the end of the season. In 1963/64 he played in the Eisenacher team and played 27 of the 30 point games. Until 1968 he kept his regular place and missed only eight games in these four seasons in 120 East German league games. In 1967 and 1968 he was the top scorer in Eisenach with twelve and eleven goals respectively. In the 1968/69 season he completed eleven of the 15 league point games in the first half of the season and then moved to the GDR league club BSG Wismut Gera , where he completed another 13 point games. Urban also became a regular player in Gera and maintained his place until 1973. In another four seasons he was used in 83 league matches (out of 104) and was Gera's top scorer three times. After he had only played eight point games in 1973/74, he initially ended his career in higher-class football after the first half of the season. After a brief interlude with the FC Carl Zeiss Jena III district league team , he became player-coach for the district league team SG Dynamo Gera for the 1975/76 season . In his second season with SG Dynamo, he led the team in the GDR league. He positioned himself in all 22 point games and scored the most goals again with six goals. After Dynamo Gera had to return to the district league after a year, Urban’s time in GDR-wide football was up. In this area he had four league appearances (without goals) and 287 GDR league games with 88 goals between 1962 and 1978. He was still active in youth football in Gera and also worked in the SG Dynamo training center.
