Leonid Kharitonovich Tibilow ( Russian Леонид Харитонович Тибилов ; Ossetian Тыбылты Харитъоны фырт Леонид ; * May 28, 1952 in Verkhny Dwan , only a few South Ossetian president and was a South Ossetian president from April 19, 2012 to April 19, 2017 , was a South Ossetian president and was a South Ossetian autonomous states from April 19, 2012 recognized Republic of South Ossetia .

Life

Leonid Tibilow comes from a farming family from South Ossetia. He studied at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the South Ossetian Pedagogical Institute , today's University of South Ossetia. After successfully completing his studies in 1975, he did his military service in the Red Army and worked as a math and physics teacher. In 1981 he switched to the Soviet secret service KGB , attended a training institute in Minsk and later worked in the Security Ministry of South Ossetia, at that time still part of the Soviet Union.

When the Soviet Union finally disintegrated in 1991 and South Ossetia split off from Georgia , Tibilov became the head of the South Ossetian secret service. In the 1990s he was also a member of a joint Georgian-South Ossetian peace mission.

In the South Ossetian presidential election in 2006 Tibilov ran, but was defeated by the incumbent President Eduard Kokoity , who officially achieved 98.1% of the votes. In the 2012 presidential election, Tibilov ran again as an independent candidate. He achieved 42.5% of the vote in the first ballot, ahead of David Sanakojew, who came in second. In a subsequent runoff between Sanakoyev and Tibilow, the latter was finally able to prevail with 54% of the vote.

Tibilov officially took office as President of South Ossetia on April 19.

Leonid Tibilow is married and has two children.
