Anatoly Ilyich Bibilow ( Ossetian : Бибылты Ильяйы фырт Анатолий, Romanized: Bibêltê Ilyayê Fert Anatoli, literally 'bibəltə ilʲajə fərt anatolij', Russian : Анатолий Ильич Бибилов) (born on 6. February 1970 in Tskhinvali , South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast , Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ) is a South Ossetian politician and military officer. Since April 21, 2017 he has been the president of the internationally hardly recognized republic.

Bibilow grew up in the South Ossetian Autonomous Region. After training in Tbilisi , he only joined the Soviet armed forces. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , he joined the armed forces of South Ossetia . In 2008 he became Minister for Civil Protection of South Ossetia. In the presidential election in South Ossetia in 2011 , he was a candidate for the Unity Party . The then Russian President Dmitri Medvedev paid an unannounced visit to North Ossetia shortly before the election and had a photo opportunity with Bibilov. Despite the informal support of the Russian government, he received only 40% of the vote and lost in the second ballot. In the presidential election in South Ossetia in 2012 , he has not raced for. In the presidential election in South Ossetia in 2017, he was not one of Moscow's favorites and won the election against then incumbent Leonid Tibilov . Since his election, Bibilov has tried to reduce dependence on Russia and to expand contacts with other countries. He traveled to Nicaragua , Serbia and Syria and visited Abkhazia ( Georgia ), the Republika Srpska ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ) and the People's Republic of Donetsk ( Ukraine ). Despite this, South Ossetia remains largely isolated.
