Leonie von Rüxleben

Leonie Freifrau von Rüxleben (born August 29, 1920 , † September 21, 2005 in Hamburg ) was a German art collector.

Life

Leonie Freifrau von Rüxleben worked as a grain broker. In almost four decades she collected around 1,300 self-portraits by artists. These include self-portraits by Hans Thoma , Heinrich Vogeler , Max Liebermann , Lovis Corinth , Johannes Boris Gurewitsch and Max Slevogt .

The extensive collection includes works by the expressionists Max Beckmann , Erich Heckel , Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Max Pechstein , Oskar Kokoschka and Otto Dix . Furthermore, Horst Janssen can be found with 20 original self-portraits, almost as many as Paul Wunderlich's . There are portraits of Johannes Grützke , Anton Kitzmüller and Reiner Schwarz , Werner Tübke , Willi Sitte , Bernhard Heisig , Harald Metzkes and Max Uhlig as well as a self-portrait by Günter Grass .

The collection is managed by the Lübeck Kunsthalle St. Annen and shown in temporary exhibitions.

Leonie von Rüxleben died at the age of 85 in Hamburg.
