Life

After a war-related interruption in his training at the Innsbruck School of Applied Arts in the sculpture class with Hans Pontiller , he continued his self-taught training. Living in Switzerland at the beginning of the 1950s, he oriented himself towards modern international art movements.

From 1952, Ganzer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master school for painting with HC Andersen. In 1958 he finished with the award of the exit price (state price). He returned to Lienz and was involved in creating an exhibition platform for East Tyrol's artists in Lienz. The “Städtische Galerie” opened in Lienz in 1964 was the first gallery in Austria to be run by a municipality. In addition to Leopold Ganzer, Franz Walchegger (1913–1965), Josef Manfreda (1890–1967) and Hermann Pedit (1933–2014) were the founding initiators .

After studying in Paris (1966) and teaching at the Mannheim Art School (1970/71), he moved to Vienna. In 1977, Ganzer was elected President of the Professional Association of Austrian Visual Artists (BVÖ).

He retired from all public functions in 1985 after a long and serious illness.

Leopold Ganzer avoided the exhibition business more and more. From 1980 onwards he increasingly drew his pictorial themes from the mountains. In 1989, after acquiring a garden on the Schafberg in Vienna, he turned to a changed conception of nature, which shaped his work to the end.

Quotes

“A critical appraisal of my artistic activity, however, revealed a not inconsiderable difference between experience and result. I also became more suspicious of expressionist exaggeration. It seemed too easy for me to get into the pathetic. "
