During an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker in Schwaz , Pontiller acquired knowledge of wood carving. In Schwaz he met the Innsbruck Art Nouveau painter Emanuel Raffeiner and the sculptor Ludwig Penz , who encouraged him to pursue further artistic activities.

After attending the Innsbruck trade school in 1909/1910, he studied from 1910 to 1915 at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with Josef Breitner and Franz Barwig the Elder and from 1915 to 1919 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Hans Bitterlich . Between 1924 and 1928 he lived freelance in Salzburg . At the beginning of 1929, Pontiller became a teacher of sculpture at the Federal Trade School in Innsbruck. Here his activity unfolded through his influence on younger sculptors such as Herbert Albrecht , Albin Moroder , Ilse Glaninger-Balzar , Erich Keber or Rudi Wach , who became known beyond the borders of Austria.

The focus of his sculptural work lies in the religious, christological area, in particular his Pietàs , the representations of Mary with the body of Jesus Christ. The most famous of his pictures of the Virgin Mary, Mary with the child in a halo from 1959, can be found in the Bergisel Memorial Chapel in Innsbruck. His works are characterized by tenderness and determination. Pontiller was an advocate of representational representation, but still open to modern trends.
