The gelatinous caps ( Leotia ) are a genus of the real hose mushrooms from the order of the Helotiales with 5 species in Central Europe and 53 species worldwide.

features

The gelatinous caps are characterized by their lively colors and, above all, by the gelatinous consistency of their meat. They are clearly subdivided into head and stem. The hymenium covers the head as a fine layer. They have sickle-shaped septate spores , which they have in common with other gelatinous genera such as the gelatinous cups (Ascocoryne). Some authors therefore place the gelatinous caps with the Helotiaceae . The gelatinous caps are also closely related to the stem tongues ( Microglossum ), which also form heads.

Systematics

The different species have traditionally been classified according to macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, especially the color of the heads. However, a phylogenetic study suggests that the color hardly allows any conclusions to be drawn about the degree of relationship.
