Lepidomeda altivelis (English name: Pahranagat spinedace ) is an extinct North American freshwater fish belonging to the carp family .

description

Lepidomeda altivelis reached a length of 3.5 to 6.6 centimeters. This fish was characterized by an extremely slanted mouth, with the top tip of the lower jaw lying approximately at eye level. It had a high, pointed dorsal fin, a compressed head and fine scales. The number of side scales was between 84 and 95. Little is known about his way of life.

distribution

Lepidomeda altivelis was endemic to the spring ponds near Ash Springs , Pahranagat Lake near Alamo, and the lower reaches of the White River in the Pahranagat Valley , Lincoln County , Nevada .

die out

Lepidomeda altivelis was last detected in 1938. A search by the ichthyologists Carl Leavitt Hubbs and Robert Rush Miller failed in 1959. Reasons for the extinction of this species were presumably the reenactment by the introduced goblin fish and habitat changes in the Pahranagat Valley.
